Barefoot Trim DVD's - Introduction
To understanding how to barefoot trim and create healthy hooves you need to understand what a natural high performance barefoot trim is all about.
Even if you choose to employ a barefoot trimmer I would still seriously recommend you understand what they are doing, and how they trim. Once you know and are able to recognize a good trim and what a healthy hoof should look like you are in the driving seat and will then be able to work out how best to exercise and work your horse(s) and how often they will need their hooves trimmed.
Having someone trim your horses hooves and not knowing what they are doing in my opinion is risky. Why? Because you are in-effect letting them loose on your horse; and lets emphasize this, "letting them loose on your horses feet." Why do I emphasize this? Because poor hooves create lame horses, so badly trimmed hooves can also create lame horses and lame horses are not something any of us want.
So, if you cannot recognize a good barefoot trim and not understand how to transition horses from shod to barefoot it is then opening up the possibility that you may not achieve sound barefoot horses.
Leaving someone to trim your horses hooves without really understanding what they are doing I personally think can be risky. This was our biggest mistake and set us back many, many months and in retrospect all we really needed to do, was to understand the basics.
So you have three choices:-
- Learn to trim completely by yourself - perfectly possible - (and if you need support you can always contact me)
- Find a trimmer and learn alongside them as well as studying at home
- Go on a barefoot trimming course
- Let someone else do all your trimming without knowing what they are doing - (This may be your only option but it is not something I would recommend.)
With options 1, 2, and 3 of you will need excellent material so that you can learn as quickly as possible and not waste valuable time; read on.........
An Outstanding Set of Barefoot Trimming DVD's

"Under the Horse" is a set of 10 DVD's. They have been put together by Pete Ramey a very experienced American barefoot trimmer and his wife, Ivy.
After reading countless books and papers, watching numerous DVD's, working with several barefoot trimmers in the UK, researching and reading material on many barefoot websites, I have found these DVD's to be the very best educational material I have ever come across and if these had been available when I started to learn about the barefoot trim they would have saved me an enormous amount of time.
They are the most comprehensive set of DVD's available on the market today. The first 6 discs are in a classroom setting and the last 4 show Pete trimming.
Disc 1
This first disc covers what we can learn from free roaming wild horses and their hooves. These horses offer us the foundation of understanding barefoot horses.
Pete shows video clips of these horses moving, (which in itself is fascinating, bearing in mind the terrain that these horses are covering) and then goes on to give us an introduction into reading hooves and potential hoof problems.
He also shows you how to go about booting your horse and the finite changes he makes to the boots so that they work to the best of their ability for the horse. Throughout his discussion he supports everything with pictures and video clips.
Over the course of the ten discs he becomes more confident with the camera and uses the camera to help us to see exactly what he is doing and how he is trimming.
When watching it you almost feel you are there in a small study group. In the later discs questions are asked and answered and there is banter between the students and teacher as he trims, which just adds to the authenticity of his work.
Disc 2
Here he covers soles, frogs, bars and his approach to trimming these different areas.
This disc alone clarified and answered so many niggling questions I have had when trimming our hooves.
Disc 3
Here Pete gives one whole disc to discuss heel height and hoof walls and his approach to trimming both.
Both areas are very important in understanding how to trim.
Disc 4
Disc 4 goes into deeper detail and covers foot development and Navicular disease. You may have no particular interest in these areas, but once you have watched this disc it will give you a deeper understanding of the hoof and how things can go wrong.
Disc 5
Laminitis - an obvious area that has to be discussed and covered when talking about barefoot trimming. Here again there is an enormous amount of very valuable material. It is such a huge subject - however this DVD answers many of the questions.
Disc 7 to 10
These last 4 discs show Pete trimming, "Under the horse." You can actually see him trimming as well as follow his thoughts on how he is approaching his work and his reasons why he is trimming each hoof in a particular way.
The case histories that he covers in these discs are and I quote Pete and Ivy, "they were the toughest cases we could find. We're showing the nasty, the unusual the challenges and how we deal with them. 11 horses and a mule, each with different problems to address."
How to Watch Them
What I found was that there was such valuable information on these DVD's it was easiest to watch each DVD, sometimes, over the space of a couple of days and taking notes at the same time.
It took me a few weeks to watch them all.
Conclusion
If you want to learn to trim and understand barefoot trimming, this set of DVD's is like goldust and is worth every penny. If you invest time and money by watching these DVD's they will help you to successfully transition your horse(s) to barefoot soundness with as little confusion as is possible.
