Horse Feed Bins

Good size feeds bins with heavy lids are ideal for storing your horse feeds as well as other yard items.

Feed bins with internal dividers so you have two or more compartments. Depending on the space available and the number of horses you have will depend on what size of bins are best suitable. Some are made up of one or two internal sections others are made up of three or four sections.

It is useful to have spare sections, as apart from storing feeds you can use sections of the bins for storing:-

You can label the inside or outside of your feed bins so that it is clear and no mistakes can occur when you or someone else is helping you feed your horses.

(Even if you are a sole horse owner there may be times when someone has to help you with your horse, if you are away or ill, so make it easy and clear for anyone who may fill in for you at the last minute.)

If you have a number of horses this is essential.

Feed Notice Board

Feed Notice Board

Keeping a board above or next to your feed bins with up to date notes of amounts of feeds/minerals/hay to be fed to your horses is ideal.

Have different coloured marker pens for notes and feed quantities.

The easiest boards to use are the dry wipe boards.

Wooden Spoons........!

How many times has this gone missing? Well if yours hasn't ....... well done! Ours has gone missing, many many times!

Wooden Spoon

Solution - buy some cup hooks screw them into the wall of your feed bins and hey 'presto' you now have a place for those wooden spoons.

Dare anyone not to put it back, after all that work.........!

If you are buying a wooden spoon get a long handled one, it makes mixing so much easier.

Water

Having a running water close by is useful for either:-

  • Mixing feeds,
  • Rinsing Tub Trugs (the best feed buckets on the market)
  • Washing wooden spoons

all basic stuff, but if you have spent time organizing your yard and feed area these little things can make the day to day work so much easier and hence more enjoyable.

You may want to invest in a "stableboy mash boiler" next to the horse feed bins. These are like a mini hot water tank and can be so useful - hot and cold water on tap.......!

You may also want a wall cupboard for storing herbal powders and supplements so they are easily to hand when making up feeds.

Flooring

If you want an easy to clean floor around your feed room and horse feed bins you can do no better than laying some rubber mats. The are much nicer to walk and stand on than a hard concrete floor and can swept and mopped claen when necessary very easily.

Then finally if you have an electric socket available you can use this for one of the many Electric Pest-Stop repellers which will keep mice and rats away. They work - and resolve any pest problems straight away and

  • on a long term basis, I love them........
Dustpan and Brush Broom

that and a broom and dustpan and brush (to hand!), preferably hanging up will keep your feed store:-

  • in tip top order.......!
