Horse Products - Introduction

Grooming products, regardless of which ones you use, if a horse is not well it will still show in their coat.

A healthy shiny coat is a reflection on how well a horse is, but if all is well, you can add a further shine and polish to their coat by washing them and using horse grooming products.

Why Buy Natural Horse Grooming Products

Check what you are using. Any strong chemically based shampoo's can irritate the skin and can create health problems.

This is because skin and hair act like 'bloating paper' - what you put on them is immediately absorbed directly into your horse's bloodstream.

Medical Research

Medical research shows us the hazards of using strong chemicals on hair and skin due to their absorption properties; i.e. there is nothing to 'prevent the uptake' of the chemicals that are put onto our skin and hair and for these chemicals to go straight into the blood stream.

This is unlike the digestive system, where if chemicals are ingested and swallowed, they go directly into the digestive system which is then able to filter out and eliminate toxins and prevent them from entering the blood stream and therefore causing health problems.

There was a study done by the University of Pittsburgh which showed that twice as many toxic chemicals can enter your body through the skin as through the intestines.

You Don't Agree.............?

Then test it for yourself:- rub garlic on your foot, you will then smell it and taste it everywhere. (The skin absorbs everything that goes on it.)

With this in mind you realise why it is worth spending a bit more time and money finding and using natural care products.

Which Horse Grooming Products

There are many horse grooming products on the market and we by no means know them all. The ones that we have checked out and used on horses are:-

Neways shampoo

This is not specifically made for horses but it works extremely well. It is made from plant derived ingredients, contains no harsh chemicals. It has:-

  • No sodium lauryl sulphate and
  • No propylene glycol

in it; both of which are very toxic and present in many of the shampoos on the market.

It's just a great shampoo and can be used on:-

  • the tail, mane and the body.

What it Feels Like

You notice straight away when using it that it doesn't dry up your hands and irritate your skin - i.e. no harsh chemicals

Alva Horse Grooming Products

There is also a company called Alva. They manufacture a range of horse grooming products which we have used and found good.

The ingredients in these horse grooming products include aloe vera and essential oils. They claim to use no pesticides or insecticides. Their products certainly work and can really help with:-

  • turninig out clean looking horses.

They have a lot of detail on their website as to how to use these horse grooming products, but to summarize simply:-

Alva shampoo

Wash, shampoo, rinse well and scrape dry with a sweat scraper. If you need to dry them further towel dry them. You can buy some towelling nappies as these absorb a lot of water, are a good size, cheap as chips, come in packs of six and last for years.

After Shampoo Gloss Finish - AlvaSparkle

You apply this after shampooing them.

Apply all over, using a sponge. It is easier if you put some first in a bucket and then use it from here with your sponge.

It creates a long lasting gloss finish and helps prevent the coat from:-

  • collecting dust
  • as well as reducing any possible stable stains

that may follow prior to your outing/competition. As always the best way to know if it is going to work for you is to try it.

Last Minute Gloss Finish - AlvaGleam

This is an ultimate coat finish.

It is recommended for use just before a showing class or whatever else you are about to do.

They recommended you apply it like the Alvasparkle. So shake the bottle and again put some of it in a clean bucket, then sponge all over the horse's coat and polish/rub up after to finish off.

Avoid putting this on the saddle area as the coat will be slippery after using this product, not what you want on this area where the saddle sits.

Main and Tail Conditioner - Alvadazzle.

Alvadazzle is Alva's mane and tail conditioner. It is useful to have this to hand on a regular basis for keeping a horse's mane and tail in order and tangle free.

It is easy to apply. Spray it on, then comb through. When combing the tail always work from the bottom of the tail up, so to avoid any unnecessary pulling and loss of hair from their tail.

You can get the 500ml bottle which is a good size to keep in your grooming bag.

Alva Sizes

You can get the larger l litre bottle and use this to refill the 500ml spray bottle.

All the above products can be bought on-line, if you go to the Show and Grooming header, on their website you will find all the Alva products mentioned above.

Plaiting and Horse Grooming Products

If you are going to be plaiting don't apply any mane or tail conditioner beforehand as it makes the hair too slippery to handle.

Hair Spray

After plaiting to help hold the plaits use hair spray. In most cases this is not usually necessary on the manes. The tails will sometimes need it. Neways make a firm hold non -toxic, non aerosol spray which works well.

As it is not an aerosol spray, the sprayer top, if it gets blocked up you need to immerse it in hot water to clear it.

Conclusion

Get some good horse grooming products, check out the ingredients the two main ones to look out for and avoid are:-

  • Propolene Glycol
  • and Sodium Laurel Sulphate.

Once you have found some good products whether it is the ones we have recommended or others it can make turning a horse out a great pleasure and with the added benefit that you are doing them no harm with what you are applying and using.
